About the event
Christmas is a time of rejoicing, filled with carols and hymns that proclaim “Hallelujah” or “Joy to the world.” However, for many people, Advent and Christmas are also challenging times as they remember loved ones who are no longer present, times of transition, and awareness of multiple sources of brokenness and sadness. It can be hard to sing of comfort and joy amid grief. For all the images of bright lights and cheery sounds, some people feel especially blue this time of year. December 21st is the longest night of the year in the Northern hemisphere, with the shortest amount of daylight, and it symbolizes a time of transition. Surrounded by darkness, a Longest Night service acknowledges grief and sorrows, and it creates space for all who struggle with this time of year. The service offers an invitation to reflect and to seek hope with faith and awareness that with each day after the 21st, there will be a bit more light and an easing of darkness. If Advent and Christmas are challenging for you this year, come and find comfort in this simple service of scripture, prayer, and lighting candles that honors the shadow side of the season.
