About the event

April 22 – 27, 2023

Washington, D.C.

Theme: “Hot and Hungry,” 1 Kings 17:7-16

During a time of drought and famine, a widow with her son was asked for food by the prophet Elijah. Her response, “I am preparing to make a last meal, and then we will die” alongside her willingness to trust God’s provision, demonstrates both hope and despair (1 Kings 17:7-16). As Christians, we are called to a ministry of caring for our neighbors and all of God’s creation; we are called to a ministry of living in hope amidst despair. The overlapping crises climate change and food insecurity are dire, but the possibilities for response are dynamic. In the past years, millions of people have entered or reentered extreme food insecurity due to disruptions caused by the effects of climate change. Significant changes are needed to slow and reverse climate change, as well as support communities most hurt by these disasters. Such changes must happen both at the policy level, as well as at community and personal levels.

Our call to peacemaking, racial justice, and service to all means that we are to act in our communities but also address policymakers to enact laws that prioritize the most vulnerable. At CCS 2023, you will learn about the climate crisis in relation to food security. You will gain tools to address Congress, hear examples of local communities’ ministry and Church of the Brethren churches around the world, and strengthen your biblical understanding of God’s love in this work.
